The Open Society Foundations deploy resources where the climate crisis intersects with other critical issues, including human rights and economic justice. Our nascent but fast-growing work on climate seeks to support vulnerable and excluded communities who are most at risk from the impact of climate change.

Objectives

SEDF advances climate solutions in ways that support inclusive and sustainable economic development, democracy, and open society in the Global South.

While the climate crisis has accelerated public and private sector commitments to reduce emissions and strengthen resilience, the flow of climate finance has not kept pace with the rate or severity of climate change – particularly where climate intersects with economic inclusion, democracy, and human rights. SEDF’s initial climate work has focused on ways climate investments can support Global-South-led green, inclusive growth. To date this has included work to advance:

  • Just, Inclusive Energy Transitions: to accelerate access to affordable renewables to mitigate climate change and improve economic and social inclusion and resilience in the communities, sectors and stages of investment that are highest risk and therefore most undercapitalized. Initial/primary focus: Africa.
  • Nature-Based Solutions: to protect, restore and manage natural ecosystems to benefit people and planet. Initial focus: Brazil, Latin America (with some Africa).

Investments

All investments are aligned with Open Society’s goal of supporting climate justice.
